Insurance can be a confusing topic, especially when it comes to the eyes. Sometimes eye exams are covered by vision insurance. Sometimes they are covered by medical insurance, even Medicare. The reason for the exam determines which insurance applies.
Routine exams for new glasses or new contacts are covered by vision insurance, not by medical insurance. However, eye exams for people with medical conditions are often covered by medical insurance. These conditions include eye problems such as dry eye, pink eye, cataracts, and others. They also include health problems such as diabetes. In some cases, both vision and medical insurance will contribute toward the cost of a visit to the eye doctor.

Many insurance plans will not contribute to the contact lens portion of the exam. If you are a contact lens wearer, you may be responsible for the cost of the contact lens evaluation, even if you have vision insurance.
Call your insurance provider to check your eligibility prior to scheduling an appointment. Or Bis-Man Eye Care Associates would be happy to check for you.
